Plan and Design your Survey

Design Tips

Here are a few tips when planning the design of your survey:

  1. Think about what you want to find out. What is the purpose of your survey?
    • Make sure every questions helps you answer that big question.
  2. Write clear and simple questions
    • Use easy words that everyone can understand.
    • Ask one thing at a time (not two in one question).
  3. Give clear answer choices
    • Make it easy for people to answer. Use tick boxes, circles or multiple choice.
  4. Record the data well
    • Make sure there is a clear space to record the data. This will be useful for when you are creating your graphs and analysing your findings.

Example Layouts

Tally graph example
A good tally graph has a title, clear labels, neat tallies, and shows patterns so it's easy to understand. This chart is good for collecting data on lots of people on one sheet. Tip: if you are using tally graphs, make sure you have a section for writing down notes.
Data collection chart example
This is an ideal chart for collecting data. It provides lots of space for collecting data which will then help when you analyse your data later on.
Survey example
This is another way to collect your data. You can ask people to rate all the foods from their most favourite to their least favourite.
